Feeding The World That Never Stop Eating
October 26, 2019Whenever we eat, we want it to fill our belly as full as possible or 'Kenyang' in Indonesian. If we eat and we still feel there's some space in our belly we will feel that our food is not 'much' enough. So we end up munching more to fill the belly gap. And how many of us say that we are already full (e.g after eating a spread of buffet) and we think that we can't eat more but then we still can eat one or two slices of cakes, pudding, pot cream, or anything? Hey, you said you were full! Remember?
Because there's a famous quote says : There's always a room for a dessert. Right?
So why we still have 'a room' for dessert? And why after those whole bunch of food, still, 2 hours later we feel the hungry pang back again? While if you go for an X-ray that time and see your belly it will definately still full of foods that we eat from the buffet+dessert 2 hours before. What is HUNGRY actually? Why we so easy feel hungry and seems like our brain and belly don't connect? Do our body has a system that protect ourselves from overeating?
The answer is : YES. Surprise.
Our dear God creates human as the most perfect creature above all His creation. So our body is also PERFECT - no matter how the shape is. In case of eating, God gives hunger to human as a way for us to keep nourishing our body and also a way of surviving so that human can grow stronger, smarter, and most importantly - wiser. Why wiser? Yes, so that human can control their hunger, managed their own food gathering process and the feeding time, and do many work loads in this world. But God always create everything in pair. If there's hunger, then there must be FULLNESS. And this couple is equipped with a tool called Hormones.
Yep, so hormones is not about sexual thing only, or acne control, or preggo woman's frienemies, or man best friend for body building. Hormone is the basic, yet extensive, tools that God create for all His living being. And the hormone that is lack of human attention - but it's super important, is LEPTIN and GHRELIN.
I don't want to spoon feeding you about those fella. Let it be your bedtime story told by Google. If I can reach the information, why can't you? But trust me, you should start to know about them.
Why you eat so much? Come on, don't be offended. How many times you eat in a day? Including liquid food or any drinks that has color and taste? Yes, it is also considered as food - because it has carbs, fat, or protein. 5 times? 6 times? 8 times? 10 times?
Don't be shocked. And Don't worry. It's NORMAL - for human in year of 2019. But it's not normal for human in 1940s. Because there was not enough food in 1940? Yes that's true. But when there's a lot of food in front of us does it mean we have to eat them all? All the time?
Our ancestor, the cave man, they can feast on fruits on trees that they find. But, did they eat those fruits at once? Nope. Did they eat the meat that they get from hunting all that once? Yes, but they share it for the whole tribe - not making their belly full for one person only.
And if we want to talk about the history of human, let's talk about our first man - The Prophet Adam. He lived in a world where he can eat buffet every hour, he even have river of honey and milk! And if you want, he can eat whatever food and drink whatever drinks - yes, boba milk tea and starbucks caramel frappucino included. He doesn't have to pay for anything. He doesn't have to open a phone app and order it. Everything is totally effortless for him. But the question is, did he eat everytime and every hour and as much as his endless belly pit can? And at once? I don't think so. Because if yes, then those roman statue and alfresco depicting Adam will be a picture of super obese man, full of illness (diabetes, heart failure, joint inflammation) and Eve will surely hate it. And maybe God will cancel his deportation to earth due to he needs to be hospitalized.
So, is it actually humane to feel hungry? Of course! But every 2 hours? It's inhumane.
But my doctor / my fitness instructure said that I need to eat more often but is smaller portion, so that my organs will keep digesting and will burn the fat. Oh, Really? Where's the journal? Ok, dont talk about the journal, it's full of scientific thingy that for sure hard to understand by us, commoners. Let's talk about small portion. Can we really eat in small portion? Cut down our portion and feel happy and full with our food? Errrr, I don't think so. If we don't eat 'satisfying' enough, we will be cranky, sleepy, brain fog, etc. So our body will give us signal to 'eat more'. Or, to translate it correctly, to add more nutrition that the body needs, because the nutrition that we put in our body before was not enough or nor correct.
And the idea of eating more often, now lead us to the brink of overeating and obese human. We forget how does it feel to feel enough. We always feel hungry. We are allowing ourselves to eat more and more and more - with the justification that we CAN eat more than we need to (or at least 3 times a day). It's not only about breakfast, lunch, and dinner anymore. But now it becomes morning coffee/tea (with croissant), morning coffee break, afternoon tea, afternoon coffee break, pre-workout smoothies, after hours sweets, bedtime juice, bedtime warm chocolate milk, etc.
If you want to dig deeper about this 'eat more burn more - in smaller portion', you will find that there is a big conspiracy theory behind it - to make us eat more, so we can't live but to think about food, so we will keep buying foods (cheaper foods because we can't afford eating expensive meal 6 times a day everyday), and the quality of those food getting lesser and lesser, and we get sick more often, so we consume more meds, and top up with more multivitamins than our Grandma did because we lack of essential nutritions, and finally - fatal sickness.
So, again, let's be a wiser human.
Food is fuel.
Is your car needs to be refueled every 2 hours? No, we wait until the fuel storage is almost empty. Why can't we do that with our body? Why our 'food meter' in our belly doesn't work or send you a false hunger alarm? Ask these two :
